Mercedes Lucy is a Margate-based artist working primarily with ceramics—a medium she is instinctively drawn to for its tactility, versatility, and deep-rooted connection to both art and craftsmanship. Her practice encompasses a wide range of handmade objects, sculptures, and illustrations, moving fluidly between two- and three-dimensional forms through drawing, painting, and murals.

Her distinctive hand-crafted tiles reflect a fascination with the intersection of function and creativity, while her designs are often laced with playful, tongue-in-cheek humour. Rooted in both imagination and close observation, her work is deeply connected to the natural world and the details of everyday life.

Themes of domesticity, feminism, motherhood, grief, and identity are central to her practice. Embracing the slow, intentional rhythm of ceramics, she counters the fast pace of modern life with a process grounded in reflection and purpose. This deliberate approach allows space to explore the often-unspoken tension women experience when creating work that may sit outside traditional notions of necessity or value.

Mercedes has been a permanent studio holder at Tracey Emin’s art studios in Margate since its’ inception in 2022.

Through her work, she weaves together form, perspective, and texture—crafting pieces that reflect the richness and contradictions of life, while offering beauty, utility, and quiet moments of joy.
