Bertha of Kent was the leading part of a remarkable network of women who helped shape early Britain during the seventh century. She was a sixth-century Frankish princess who became queen of Kent through her marriage to King Æthelberht. A Christian living in a largely pagan Anglo-Saxon kingdom, she played a crucial role in introducing and supporting Christianity in England before the arrival of Saint Augustine in 597. Through her faith, diplomacy and influence at court, Bertha helped lay the foundations for Canterbury as the centre of the English Church. She is remembered as one of the women who quietly transformed the course of early English history.
