Saint Ethelburga

Ethelburga of Minster-in-Thanet was an eighth-century abbess and saint. She became known for scholarship, religious leadership and her support of missionary work across Europe. She represents a quieter, intellectual kind of female influence. She was highly educated and deeply involved in the exchange of knowledge and religious texts — unusual for a woman of the period. As abbess, she led around seventy nuns and helped strengthen Minster Abbey as both a spiritual and political centre. She built a new church to house Mildrith’s relics, helping establish pilgrimage traditions in Kent.
