Saint Sexburga
Approx. 10cm × 10cm
Seaxburh of Ely was one of the most powerful royal women in early Anglo-Saxon England — a queen, regent, abbess and saint who moved between political and religious authority at a time when very few women are clearly visible in the historical record. She embodied several forms of female power : dynastic, spiritual, intellectual and administrative. She helped create a network of influential royal women saints whose monasteries preserved learning, controlled land and shaped early English Culture. Historians also note that she became a model for widowed queens entering religious life, helping make convent leadership an accepted path for elite women.
